Australia
Entry Requirements

Overview of regulations and requirements.

Australia warmly welcomes visitors – but entry, visa and quarantine rules are strictly regulated. To ensure your time Down Under gets off to a smooth start, it’s important to be familiar with the current requirements before you travel – from the right visa to customs rules and health information.

To enter Australia, you must hold a valid passport as well as a valid visa, regardless of your travel purpose. Even tourists require a visa, which must be obtained before departure.

The most common tourist visas for travellers from Germany and the EU are:

Australia protects its unique environment with some of the strictest biosecurity rules in the world. Many import restrictions and declaration requirements exist to prevent diseases and pests that could threaten animals, plants or entire ecosystems.

Restrictions and declaration requirements apply particularly to:

Food items, plants, seeds and animal products are subject to strict regulations, and even small quantities usually need to be declared. Violations can result in significant fines.

Pets, plants and animal products are subject to particularly strict import regulations. Many animal species require several weeks of quarantine before entering Australia, and detailed import conditions apply, often requiring long preparation times.

Vaccinations

There are generally no mandatory vaccinations required for entry into Australia. Only individuals who have spent extended time in certain high-risk countries may be required to provide proof of a recent polio vaccination as part of their visa application.

Although not required, medical professionals recommend ensuring that all standard vaccinations are up to date according to the current vaccination schedule.

For longer stays, travel to rural regions or activities involving animals, additional vaccinations may be advisable (e.g. hepatitis A/B, tetanus).

Medical Examinations

For standard holiday trips or Work & Travel stays, health checks or medical examinations are generally not required. Australia only requests a medical examination under certain circumstances as part of the visa application process. Whether a health assessment is required depends on the type of stay, its duration and individual circumstances.

For permanent visas, on the other hand, medical examinations are usually mandatory.
