If you are an Australian permanent resident and your travel facility has expired or is expiring soon, you need a Resident Return visa (RRV subclass 155) to re-enter Australia after travelling overseas. An RRV renews your travel rights while keeping your permanent residency fully intact, allowing you to leave and return to Australia without disruption.
Eligibility
You may qualify for a 5-year Resident Return visa if you:
- Are an Australian permanent resident
- Hold a valid passport
- Meet the residency requirement (730+ days as a permanent visa holder in Australia within the last 5 years)*
- Hold a permanent visa that has not been cancelled
- Do not have a substantial criminal record
* Your time in Australia does not need to be consecutive — the required 730 days can be accumulated over the five-year period preceding your application.
Visa validity
- Valid for 5 years
- Allows multiple travel to and from Australia
- Your permanent residency status remains unchanged
If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can use our online service to apply for your 5-year RRV.

Resident Return - FAQS

Yes. If your travel facility has expired or is about to expire, you must hold a valid Resident Return visa (RRV 155) to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident.
02 How long is a Resident Return visa valid for?
If you meet the 730-day residency requirement, you can receive a 5-year RRV with full travel rights.

If you do not meet the residency requirement, you may still be eligible for a shorter RRV if you can demonstrate substantial ties to Australia. We will help you find the best strategy and support you to give your application the best chance of success.
